1st Mediterranean Flute Competition

Competition rules

§1


The 1st Mediterranean Flute Competition will be part of the Flute Meeting 2009 and will be held in the city of Larissa, Greece, between 22 and 25 of April 2009. It is organised by FluteArt, a non-profit cultural society whose aim is to advance the level of the art of flute playing.



§2 Age limit - Enrolment


The competition is open to flutists of all nationalities, born after April 22, 1979.
The application must be sent by February 1, 2009 (postal stamp), to:

Due to a certain degree of insecurity regarding postal mail, applicants must send an email to info@flutemeetings.com informing the organisers of the mailing date of their application.

Enrolment is definitive only after receipt of the following:

1. Copy of the payment of the enrolment charge of EURO 30, which is not refundable.


The enrolment charge as well as the entrance fee (see article 3) must be deposited to the following bank account:

Note in reference the name of the candidate.
All bank charges must be paid by the applicant!


2. Recent portrait of the candidate
printed (min. 9 x 12 cm and clearly marked with the candidate’s surname and name on the back).

3. Copy of birth certificate or passport

4. Copy of music certificates/diplomas (if applicable)

5. Short biography
(no more than 200 words)
(musical studies, main teachers and artistic activity, written in English)


6. Two letters of recommendation by two recognised musicians, written especially for the competition,
preferably in Greek or English, or officially translated in English.

The enrolment dossier will not be returned.




§3 Entrance fee

Applicants will be informed by email after February 15, 2009 as to whether they have been accepted in to the competition. They can always check with our website www.flutemeetings.com.
After the announcement of the list of the candidates who has been accepted to the competition, the accepted candidates must deposit the entrance fee of EURO 110 (see bank details above) prior to February 28, 2009. Canditates who fail to pay this amount in time, will not be accepted.
The entrance fee automatically allows the candidate to participate in all events of the Flute Meeting 2009 without any other charge.
The entrance fee cannot be reimbursed in case a contestant who has been accepted does not show up.

For those applicants in need of a visa: they may ask the Secretariat for a confirmation of participation in the Competition, which will be sent to them.




§4

Competitors must report to the Secretariat of the 1st Mediterranean Flute Competition on the 21st of April 2009, from 17:00 to 20:00 the latest, at:

In extraordinary circumstances (forcemajeure), the Organizing Committee may permit late arrivals to participate in the competition, if they report personally and only if the first round is not completed.





§5 Rounds - Programme

The competition has three rounds, a preliminary (solo), a semi-final (with piano) and the final (with orchestra).

2nd ROUND

1. One of the following works:

• Carl Reinecke: Sonata ”Undine” Op. 167
• Charles Marie Widor: Suite Op. 34
• Otar Taktakishvili: Sonata
• Paul Hindemith: Sonata



2. One of the following works:

• Eugène Bozza: Agrestide Op. 44 (1942)
• Henri Dutilleux: Sonatine (1943)
• Pierre Sancan: Sonatine (1946)

3.
• C. P. E. Bach: “Hamburger” Sonata

3rd ROUND

1. F. Devienne: Concerto No 2 in D, ή Concerto No 7 in E minor
2. W. A. Mozart: Andante in C


All three rounds are open to the public.

The programme of the competition is not expected to be performed from memory.

Competitors may perform the works of each round in any order they choose.

Competitors are advised to make their choices carefully as they must perform the works they have included in their application. Changes of choice will not be accepted.


 
 

§6 Drawing of Lots

The order of performance will be determined by lot in the morning of April 22, 2009 at place and exact time which will be announced to the participants when they register. The presence of all competitors is requested while the lots are being drawn.
The 1st round of the Competition will begin at 15:00 pm of the same day.
The 2nd round will take place on the 2nd day of the flute meeting (April 23) and the third round on the 3rd day (April 24).
A maximum of 10 competitors will be admitted to the second round.

A maximum of 5 competitors will be selected for the final round.
The order will remain unchanged throughout the entire competition.





§7

It is not allowed:

• To disturb or approach the members of the jury during the competition with intention to influence their judgement in any way. In such case the competitor will be disqualified even after competing.
• to record, film or take photos of the competitors during the competition.

 
   PRIZES
 

§8 Prizes

The prizes will be as follows:

• 1st prize: 3000 Euros
The winner of this prize will also be invited to perform in the next Flute Meeting.

• 2nd prize: 2000 Euros

• 3rd prize: 1000 Euros

• A special “Nikos Chalikias” prize of 700 Euros will be awarded to the most promising flutist of Greek nationality.

All prize-winners are requested to be present at the Final Award Ceremony of the Competition. Failure to comply with this rule will result in withdrawal of the prize.

 
 
 

§9

The organisers reserve the right to:

• Record the three rounds of the competition for radio, TV and the Internet
• film and record on video, CD and the like and photograph the competitors during the performance

In these cases, competitors and accompanists disclaim all rights and fees.




§10 Jury

The jury will consist of prominent musicians from around the world.
The jury reserves the right:
• not to award one or more prizes
• to divide a prize between two competitors, except for the first prize
• to issue special distincitons
The jury’s decision is final and cannot be appealed.

 

§11 Accompanists – Rehearsals – Expenses

The Organizing Committee will provide experienced accompanists for the competitors free of charge. Competitors who will go through the second and third round will have a one-hour rehearsal session with the accompanist or the orchestra for each round.

Competitors are permitted to bring their own accompanists. In that case they must include this information together with the name and nationality of their accompanists in the application form. The organizers will not be responsible for any expenses incurred.
Travelling expenses and hotel expenses must be paid by the competitors and their accompanists.

Information about hotel accommodation and a list of various hotels with reasonable prices will soon be available on www.flutemeetings.com

 

§12

Participation in the competition means full acceptance of these rules.
These rules were originally written in Greek.
Any dispute will be settled with in accordance with the Greek version of the rules.
